Fire occurred the night of September 27, 2023

Since the total loss of the Port Clyde General Store and Dip Net restaurant, it has become ever more clear how emotionally connected our customers and visitors are, from near and far, and how loved and appreciated these businesses and buildings have been for many decades of time.

I am joined by Veronika, Lexi at the Dip Net, Naomi, Melissa, and our wonderful staff in thanking all who are reaching out with love and supportive messages. We share the heartbreak expressed to us personally and in social media.

We are grateful there was no loss of life in the horrific fire. We pray for guidance, and we proceed with caution.

We feel strongly motivated to rebuild a replacement that is as welcome in our community as before this unexpected intervention.

The physical cause is still under forensic investigation and the insurance people have to look at a great many aspects of detail.

Together with our neighbors, the Barstow family, our own General Store and Dip Net family thanks you for your respect for the safety lines around the damage site which is an extremely fragile area.

The uncontainable fire was the victor in the long persistent battle put against it by firefighters who came from miles and extended miles to join those of our own St George brave men.

Rebuilding an iconic village waterfront center presents obstacles and standards about which we gain more clarity every day.

This is much much more than losing buildings and their current contents. It is about the current pain and emotions of people who live here, have worked here, have visited here. Pictures and stories are flowing in to be shared.

The current tone in the community is not just looking back but about rebuilding confidence that is shaken when we find we are not expecting our earthly dreams and accustomed structures and possessions to be burned up, torn down, and sent into the black hole of a landfill.

Our response right now is about rerouting daily access to the outer island of Monhegan, and the Colby College island commitments at Allen and Benner. Is is about disengaging our slips, floats and boat fuel service to all who have depended on the Port Clyde General Store Complex for service where suddenly it’s not possible to supply.

Our lead team is engaged in a massive “redirect” that will continue for weeks, then months, until we are back up with customary provisioning, fuel, meals, Wyeth art shop and all the rest.

There are huge emotional community losses to assuage, and business losses that are not yet totaled.

As we restore the village center so important to this part of the world, please know that with our help, understanding and leadership under the capable direction of our CEO Veronika Carlson, Store Operations Manager Naomi Gettle and Chef Melissa Hupper, the job will be done.

A special honoring shout out to our sister store, the Tenants Harbor General Store, for help with coffee and food to the rescue workers.

My thanks and love to all, with a reminder to get healthful hours of sleep, good hydration from pure water, and adequate nutrition to perform the family and business leadership needed at this juncture.

We have 17 years under our belt as owner and managers and staff here, and with God’s help we will persevere.
